Surgery Wait Times

All patients are important.

However, priority is to ensure that oncology patients meet designated Provincial wait times for surgery.

Patients waiting for elective general surgery may experience significant wait times. The provincial targets are listed below. Additional information is available at: www.health.gov.on.ca.

If you are experiencing worsening signs or symptoms related to your condition, please contact the office to schedule an urgent appointment.

If you have an emergency situation proceed directly to the hospital for care.

Standby List

Dr. Shum is regularly scheduled on the Acute Care Surgery Service at Health Sciences North. Patients may be given the opportunity to utilize the OR time on a standby basis if there are no emergency surgeries required on that particular day. However, patients on the standby list may be cancelled at any time if the operating room is required for an acute life-threatening emergency. Nevertheless, the probability of having your elective surgery completed is approximately 70%.

If you are scheduled on the standby list for a particular day, you will be notified by 9am whether your surgery has a likelihood of proceeding. Again, emergencies are unpredictable and you may still be cancelled at any time. If you are cancelled, you will rejoin the standard wait list. We make every attempt not to cancel someone more than once.

The hospital now requires a negative COVID-19 swab test prior to any planned surgical or endoscopic procedure. The hospital will contact you with further instructions.
